Knowing the Hummingbird or Colibri Pico Espada

Perhaps you've been lucky enough to see a hummingbird while feeding, literally floating to the flower that is sipping nectar. However, this is not always easy, because the Colibri is the smallest bird in the world, while its weight rarely exceeds two grams.

Formerly they were hunted to serve as decoration on hats for women, but fortunately this practice has now disappeared, which has enabled many hummingbird species recover from near-certain extinction.

The hummingbird or Colibri can be found throughout the Americas, but is most abundant in the tropics. Some species are only found in certain areas. This is the case of the world's smallest hummingbird, hummingbird called elf zunzuncito or bees, which is just over five and a half inches long and can only be found on the island of Cuba.

At the other extreme we have the largest hummingbird there, called giant hummingbird, whose length can reach 25 centimeters and can be found in Patagonia. One of the most curious is the hummingbird pico espada, whose peak is almost as much as his body, about four inches.

The plumage of the hummingbird is loaded with bright colors, and can find different species reflected in almost all colors of the rainbow, although most of them the predominant color is metallic green. The males in the neck feathers more prominent colors like bright red or blue, colors that provide a claim for females.

The different species of hummingbirds are distinguished primarily by their beaks, which is different in each, depending on the flower to feed. Convenient to fly from flower to flower, the hummingbird is the only bird in the world that can fly backwards.
